A Love of Reading

It is an understatement to say I like reading..  I love reading.  I do it late at night while the girls are in bed or on long car drives (while Ben is driving, of course.)  I get panicky when I don't have the next book picked out.  For our anniversary, Ben bought me a Kindle, which I have enjoyed immensely.  I read all kinds of genres, from historical fiction to autobiographies to medical mysteries.  I don't read trashy romance novels or many westerns. I'll even read cookbooks!

For 2011, I plan on listing each book I've read.  I have already read The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins.  It was entertaining and well written.  The trilogy was considered teen literature, but any age would enjoy.

Haven't found the next book yet, I need to do some research on Amazon! I'm always open to suggestions about books worth reading.

Our First Amaryllis

Tillee 12/26

At the beginning of December, Grandma Hjordis gave us an Amaryllis.  This was the first one we have grown, and it sure did well in our house.  We have all enjoyed its glittery, red flowers.  Tillee asked me if I sprinkled glitter on the petals!  It just fits into the holiday season perfectly.

It grew 21" tall, and had 5 flowers.  Its stalk amazed the girls and led to some conversations about how interesting a field of amaryllis would look!   Can't wait to grow another one next year :)

The Quade Beach Trip

This August, we were lucky to have my side of the family get together at our beach house in Lincoln City.  We had lots of fun, food, and family time.  We even got to spend time with Auntie Mil at her beach house in Road's End.  Greg, Heather, and Henry were down with Ted and Tammy.  Greg and Ted barbequed some awesome burgers and we had a great dinner with family we don't get to see much!  Jay's family even came over to Auntie Mil's.  It was so fun.  Tammy played Sorry and Too Many Monkeys with the kids, and the girls loved seeing her 4 month old St. Bernard, Bella.  (sorry, no pics!)

Back at the Krusty Krab, we were eating s'mores off of the smokey joes (they are portable you know!) and just enjoying each other.  The girls went shopping on Saturday for a bit, and some of us went out on a party boat on Sunday.  We are definitely going to have to do it again...

The weather was beautiful, and the weekend was a blast.  Quincee and Tillee love to share the beach house.  We did miss Karsyn, who was at a soccer tournament with her mom.   I already have plans for next year :)

The Dream Rig

Double Slug Bug

Quincee and Tillee have been playing slug bug every time they get into the car this summer.  That game is our constant companion, and yes, sometimes Mom would like to throw the "companion" out the window.  But, they saw this awesome mini VW bus at the Oregon State Fair, and proclaimed "We want one of these!!"  They then proceeded to give Bethie, Angi, Jay, Amber, and I each a double slug bug to the arm or leg.  I couldn't help but smile!

p.s.  I want one too!!

My First Bento

Quincee's lunch
When researching new lunch ideas, I found a bunch of American moms with bento blogs.  I love the bento idea:  healthy, homemade lunches, with less waste.  The focus is on lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, and fun designs that kids enjoy in a small convenient box.  This will work out perfectly for Quincee, who tearfully told me that last year I packed her too much food and she could never eat it all. I just didn't want her to go hungry  :)  Since she was little, Quincee has not really been into food, though she is getting better.

So today I packed a "nest" of sliced Fri Chik (fake meat we've been eating for years), a fresh mozzerella ball for the little birdie, broccoli trees, corn off the cob, 2 small heart jelly sandwiches, and tapioca pudding.

I packed a similar lunch for Tillee at the same time, even though I am off work today.  This saves time and cleanup duty later.  She wanted a lunch in the new EasyLunchBox that I found at EasyLunchBox.com.

Quincee is very excited about the bento lunch, and enjoys going to blogs where they post lots of bento ideas/lunches they have made their children.  Mine is definitely a beginner bento, but it was fun putting it together!
